How to motivate yourself to learn Polish?
Here are some ways to do so!
13 Cze | 2024
Have you started learning Polish so many times, but quit after a short time? Do you put off learning for a "better time"? Are you no longer able to motivate yourself? No worries! We have some proven ways for you to start (and continue) learning Polish, so you can reach your dream goal.

- Eat that frog
This is the most popular rule to combat putting things off. Of course, we can also apply it to learning Polish 😊. It involves starting learning with the most difficult and challenging tasks. The best time for these tasks is in the morning, when we have the most energy and a rested head. We also have a reserve of strong willpower, which is depleted during the day with each new decision we make. So start your day, for example, with a list of the 5 most difficult words from your last Polish lesson.
- Don’t neglect important tasks
When learning Polish, self-discipline plays an important role. There are many tasks that are not urgent, so we put them off even though they are very important. Make a list of such things, write them in your calendar and get to work!
- How to eat an elephant?
Piece by piece, of course! Don’t let sentences that are too big overwhelm you. Divide them into chunks (even the size of learning one word) and tackle them step by step! Then you won’t be overwhelmed, and you’ll move at your pace in the direction you’ve set.
- Lower the bar
If learning the varieties of all verbs in Polish sounds like an impossible task, which makes you always put it off – lower the bar! Decide to learn two new Polish vocabulary words a day, rather than a whole long list right away! This way you will get rid of unnecessary pressure and not wanting to embarrass yourself in front of yourself – just do the task.
- Cut and shorten
Do you plan your daily study? Do you write in your calendar that you will spend the next two hours learning cases in Polish? Does the very thought make you weak? No wonder! For our brain, such a scheduled task is a real nightmare, it immediately makes you reluctant to even start. What if you planned to study for 5 minutes to begin with? In the course of them you might find yourself craving for more and more! And even if you don’t, you’ll finish that day after 5 minutes, the goal will be achieved, and you’ll feel satisfaction. Even such a short daily practice will allow you to develop a good habit of reaching for Polish, and over time will bring tangible results.

- Want to, not have to
Unless you are already in school and your further education depends on it – you don’t have to study.
Shocking, huh? Learning anything will come much easier to you if you have a keen interest in the subject. So maybe you should ask yourself at the very beginning – why? Why do I want to learn Polish? Once you answer this question for yourself, motivation will come on its own.
- Make mistakes!
Don’t be afraid of making mistakes while speaking Polish and beware of perfectionism! There is no better learning than practice. And that’s from the very beginning. Don’t be discouraged by the fact that you will make mistakes, it’s perfectly normal. It’s better to use the language from the very first lesson than to wait until we can build a perfect, long sentence, because without practice it will never happen! Talk, listen, play with the language. In time, without much effort, you will find that you speak fluent Polish and no longer have problems understanding others!
- Speak Polish – as much as possible
Whenever you have the opportunity, speak Polish. If you attend a Polish language course at the Varia School, talk to anyone you can in Polish :). It can be a conversation with nice stuff working in the Varia office, with other course participants, or with anyone… Nothing develops the motivation to learn Polish like the awareness that you can get along and that learning Polish brings results.
- And do it regularly
It may be difficult to maintain the appropriate pace and regularity in learning Polish on your own. Taking part in a Polish course will certainly make things easier. You pay, you go, you learn. And you do it systematically! You have a set day and time, learning Polish comes almost automatically. When choosing a course, take into account the school’s reputation, opinions about Polish courses and the school’s experience. Polish courses at the Varia Polish Language Center (20 years on the market!) are rated by customers as 5 stars – no other school in Poland can boast of such a result.
