How learning foreign languages
affects the brain
15 Kwi | 2024
Knowledge of foreign languages not only helps in communication and getting to know the cultures of other nations but is also a wonderful way to maintain a healthy and agile brain for years to come! For many years, scientists from around the world have been studying how learning new languages affects brain function and cognitive development.
Let’s take a closer look at several aspects and answer the question of why it is worth investing time and energy in the process of learning foreign languages.
Strengthening brain structures
One of the most important effects of learning foreign languages is strengthening brain structures. Research such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has shown that people learning foreign languages show structural changes in brain areas responsible for memory, perception, and executive functions. Specifically, areas such as the cerebral cortex and hippocampus (associated with memory) show increased activity in people learning new languages.
Improving cognitive functions
Learning foreign languages also promotes the improvement of cognitive functions. Individuals proficient in multiple languages often have better selective attention, problem-solving abilities, and greater information processing ability compared to monolingual individuals. These skills are significant not only in the context of learning but also in everyday functioning, such as decision-making or coping with stress.
Protection against neurodegenerative diseases
The health benefits of learning foreign languages are also noteworthy. Studies suggest that multilingual individuals have a reduced risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease. It is believed that regular brain stimulation provided by learning foreign languages may contribute to delaying or alleviating the symptoms of these diseases.
Strengthening social skills and cultural understanding
We cannot forget about the social and cultural benefits of learning foreign languages. Individuals proficient in different languages often demonstrate greater empathy, understanding, and openness to cultural diversity. This, in turn, fosters building better interpersonal relationships and collaboration skills in a globalized world.
Learning foreign languages is not only about practical benefits enabling communication in different languages but also has a profound impact on brain development. Therefore, it is worthwhile to encourage both children and adults (at any age) to learn foreign languages! The Polish language may turn out to be an ideal choice!
