• Errors in declension and case inflection: Polish language has seven cases, which can be challenging at first. Foreigners (as well as native speakers) often struggle with the correct declension of nouns, adjectives, or pronouns depending on the case.

Common errors:

In the accusative case:

• „piję herbatu” correctly: „piję herbatę”

• „kupiłam sukniu” correctly: „kupiłam suknię”

In the instrumental case:

• „interesuję się sportom” correctly: „sportem”

• „piję kawę z mlekom” correctly: „mlekiem”

• „on jest dentystem” correctly: „dentystą”

In the dative and locative cases:

• „dałam coś koleżankie” correctly: „koleżance”

• „leży na podłogie” correctly: „na podłodze”

In the nominative plural:

• „Polaki” correctly: „Polacy” • „pracowniki” correctly: „pracownicy”

• „dziadki” correctly: „dziadkowie”

• „ojcy” correctly: „ojcowie”

• Difficulties with pronunciation of certain sounds: Some sounds in Polish can be difficult to pronounce for speakers whose native language doesn’t have similar sounds. For example, the sound „rz” or „sz” often poses a challenge.

At our school, we often conduct phonetic workshops focusing on practicing specific Polish sounds. We warmly invite every student to participate!

• Errors in verb conjugation: Verbs in Polish are conjugated by person, tense, and mood, and they also have aspects. There’s a lot to agree on and remember, but don’t worry – it’s not as scary as it seems 😉 Having a good understanding of Polish language norms is a big help in recognizing and avoiding grammatical errors. And of course – systematic learning and daily practice are the keys to success!

Here are some commonly made mistakes:

• „Czy to rozumiesz?” Correct form: „Czy to rozumiesz?”

• Verb „spał”: „ja spam ty spasz.” Correct form: „ja śpię, ty śpisz.”

• Verbs „znać” and „wiedzieć”: „Ja wiem tego chłopaka.” Correct form: „ja znam tego chłopaka.”

• Aspect: „Już prawie jadłem cały obiad.” Correct form: „Już prawie zjadłem cały obiad.”

• Subjunctive mood: „Pojecham był do cioci, ale nie mam samochodu.” Correct form: „Pojechałbym do cioci, ale nie mam samochodu.”

• Lexical errors: This type of errors often occurs when words sound similar or when a given word exists in the student’s native language but has a different meaning in Polish. Examples include:

Common Slavic mistakes:

• „księgowa” – Ukrainian „knyżkowa połycja”, Polish „półka na książki”. Example: „Na ścianie w pokoju wiesi księgowa półka.”

• „namalować” – Russian „nakrasyt’”, Polish „umalować się // pomalować się”. Example: „Wczoraj rano wstałam, umyłam się, namaliowałam.”

• „bezwyjściowa sytuacja” – Polish „sytuacja bez wyjścia”, Ukrainian „bezwychidna sytuacija”. Example: „Była to bezwyjściowa sytuacja;”

• „policzki” – Polish „półeczki”. Example: „Mam szafę z policzkami.”
